Homeschool Days - A Mountain of History

Kick off your fall adventure at Strawberry Hill with a day filled with history, nature, hands-on activities, and plenty of family fun!

10:00 AM–12:00 PM - Sugars, Syrups & Sauces - We all know and love maple syrup, but did you know the forest can provide a whole pantry of delicious treats? Join us for a tasty demonstration exploring the many foods and flavors that can come from the forest.

10:00 AM–2:00 PM - Strawberry Hill Quilting Jamboree - Calling all quilters and crafty families! Help us piece together a one-of-a-kind scrap quilt inspired by the traditions of days gone by. We’ll have fabric pieces ready for you to hand sew, so stop by and add your own stitch to this special project.

10:30–11:00 AM - Monarch Migration - Fall means migration! Monarch butterflies are beginning their incredible journey south, but the road to warmer weather isn't an easy one. Discover the challenges, dangers, and amazing adaptations that help these tiny travelers make their way south for the winter.

10:30–11:30 AM - Apple Head Dolls - Before toy stores and video games, colonial families had to get creative when it came to entertaining their children! Join local historian and Mount Hope descendant Sally Thomas as she explores the history of apple head dolls—and learn how to make one of your own!

11:00 AM–12:00 PM - Creature Feature - Get up close and curious about the creatures that once roamed Pennsylvania's forests! Through hands-on learning, discover how fear, misunderstanding, folklore, and changing attitudes toward wildlife shaped the history of these fascinating animals.

11:15 AM–12:00 PM - Colonial Road Hike - Ever wondered what lies beneath your feet? Join us for a hike along a portion of the Mount Hope Trail and uncover the stories of the people, paths, and places that once shaped this landscape. History may be hiding just beneath the fallen leaves!

12:00–12:30 PM - Lunch on Your Own - Pack a picnic and enjoy lunch with your family at our pavilion.

12:30–1:30 PM - Build Your Burrow - Winter is coming—and you've got a burrow to build! Put your survival skills to the test as you design and construct a temperature-stable shelter using natural materials such as grass, sticks, leaves, and more. Can you build a burrow cozy enough to survive the winter?

12:30–1:30 PM - Fall Foraging Walk - The summer harvest may be winding down, but the forest still has plenty to offer! Join us for an autumn foraging walk as we explore fall plants and trees, practice identification skills, and learn about traditional ways people have used the seasonal harvest.

Come explore the history, traditions, wildlife, and wild foods of the Pennsylvania mountains this fall!
