Meet the Staff

Chuck Reid, Executive Director

chuck_staffChuck came to Strawberry Hill after 10 years in local, county, and state government protecting open space and developing community recreational services and amenities. Prior to being appointed Director for Strawberry Hill, Chuck worked on developing Adams County's Greenway and Open Space Plan and was employed in the PA Department of Natural Resources' Community Partnership Division. In 2003 as Director for the Stroud Region Open Space and Recreation Commission, Chuck helped to establish the first regional recreation commission in Monroe County, PA.

Chuck obtained his Masters in Public Administration from Virginia Tech and his Bachelors focusing on Outdoor Recreation and Experiential Education from Penn State. While attending Penn State, he was involved with managing the Penn State Outdoor Club and helped to provide environmental education programs at Shaver's Creek Environmental Center.

An avid outdoor enthusiast, Chuck enjoys mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, snowboarding, and mountaineering. He has climbed and hiked in Denali, AK, the Tetons, WY, the Rockies, CO, the White Mountains, NH, Sierra Nevada's, CA, and many sections of the Appalachian Trail.

Karen Mann-Machamer, Programs and Events Coordinator

karenKaren has always enjoyed outdoor activities and nature. She earned a B.S. degree in Plant Science and Ornamental Horticulture from the University of New Hampshire and after a period of time employed in the landscaping industry and in administration, she and her husband, John, moved to the Gettysburg area where they happily raised their three children.

Primarily an at-home mom, Karen utilized her management skills as a volunteer and by serving as PTO President in her children's schools. As her kids grew and progressed through the school system and on to college, so did she - eventually moving on to work at both Gettysburg and Goucher Colleges. Now, finally, Karen feels as though she has come full circle, working for Strawberry Hill, and reacquainting herself with the birds, bees, and other wonders of nature.

Kay Deardorff, Promotion and Outreach Coordinator

Kays_picturesm_webA writer, crafter and teacher who can be found "clowning around" as Joy who makes balloon animals, or as Polly Nator who visits the Nature Center to share information about honey bees. At Strawberry Hill, Kay is able to combine her creativity and passion to educate with a love of children and nature.
